Detroit Tiger Ticket Mania

COPA CrowdThe Detroit Tigers are eying ticket sales today to see if they could possibly sell out home games before the season even starts. Dave Dombrowski warned us all in mid-January that tickets were going to be tough to come by:

“I would suggest to people that when our individual season tickets go on sale in March, buy your tickets quickly,” he said. “They are going to go quickly.”

He’ll need this money to secure a size-able long-term deal with Miguel Cabrera before the season starts. According to Jon Heyman in the SI article, the deal could be on the order of $20M a year (or more) for at least eight years. We will have to just wait and see what the numbers look like on paper though as there isn’t much corroborating evidence in the article except:

Asked him if he’d like a 10-year deal, he said that “sounded interesting” to him. Asked if he thought $20 million a year would be right, he said, “That sounds good.”

Not sure what kind of question that is to ask as I’m sure that sounds good to about anyone. A bit less probably sounds good too though it is probobly very close to correct. Baseball Prospectus’ MORP value for Cabrera is currently sitting above $20M through 2014. If it keeps ticket sales going the way they are going this year far into the future, it probably sounds good to Mr. Ilitch as well. We should all keep on the look out for some announcement regarding Cabrera next week.

Those looking for tickets today, which went on sales about an hour and a half ago, you’ll either have to go sit in the ‘Virtual Waiting Room’ at tigers.com or call 866-66Tigers. If those don’t work you can always use the ticket broker sites: ticketsnow.com or stubhub.com.

Detroit faces Cleveland today at Joker Marchant Stadium @ 1:05. Dontrelle Willis will take the mound for Detroit. Tiger batters will face C.C. Sabathia, who is starting what is likely his last year with Cleveland. Thankfully. You can listen to the game on FM 97.1 (WXYT).
