Chris Shelton DFA’d by Rangers

Ex-Tiger Chris Shelton was designated for assignment by the Texas Rangers today:

The Texas Rangers added right-hander Kazuo Fukumori to their 40-man roster Monday after finalizing his $3 million, two-year contract agreed to last month.

To make room on the roster, the Rangers designated for assignment infielder Chris Shelton, who was acquired from Detroit in a Dec. 5 trade for outfielder Freddy Guzman. Texas has 10 days to trade, release or outright Shelton to the minor leagues.

I had anticipated him giving Ben Broussard a run for his money for the primary role at first base this next year, and he still might. His loss of power probably had a bit to do with this decision but it’s a move that they just might regret, at least some at Lone Star Ball seem to already be regretting it.

I’d love to see Chris get back on-track this year regardless of who he plays for and at what level. I believe he has the ability to be a very serviceable 1B with spurts of power.

I gotta agree with you. Why would you trade for the guy (who has had some success) and then not even give him a chance? It really doesn’t seem to make much sense. Oh well, the whole thing still needs to play out, he could still end up with the Rangers.
