Chris Shelton to Texas for Guzman

Chris SheltonEarlier today it was announced that Detroit had traded for Freddy Guzman with the Player to be Named Later (PTBNL). Well, now is later and the player is Chris Shelton. Certainly there is no shock with this move but Shelton retains many fans in this town. The writing was on the wall as he was chopped from the 40-man last week.

While not a major trade by any means it made sense for Detroit. Carlos Guillen, or Miguel Cabrera, has first base locked up for the foreseeable future leaving zero room for Chris. Guzman is not an exciting player but is a switch hitter who can give some LH at-bats and fill the now vacant CF spot in Toledo with the departure of Cameron Maybin.

A trade of this caliber seems a long way from the 10 HR April in 2006 and the valid debate of whether Shelton or Casey belong at first base for Detroit. That said, the situation now is incredibly better.

    Chris Shelton’s gone? How’d I miss that!?

I feel like I should say something for him, after all, he had one of the best months by anyone, ever.

Well Chris, I’m naming you my all-time favorite P.T.B.N.L.

Did he use batting gloves when he batted in a game? I’m kinda’ thinkin’ I remember him bare knucklin’ it…

Some quick research on Freddy Guzman (thanks for the link) reveals a 26 year old AAA’er, with Juan Pierre-ish numbers. High steal totals, no power, modest average, a few more walks than Juan (but off AAA pitching of course). Overall, looks about as useful as Chris.

Based on Dombrowski’s record, I’m tempted just to call it a good trade.

Ya, I’d agree. It’s an even swap where we might get a little use out of Guzman but Shelton had no future here due to Guillen holding down first.

Shelton will likely be a starting first baseman for the Rangers. So it means more for them.
