Tigers sign Rick Porcello; 2007 Draft Update

The Detroit Tigers signed a few notable draft picks today and didn’t have a problem opening up their pocket books while doing it. Starting off the day it was announced that first round draft pick Rick Porcello was signed to a huge $7.3M four-year major league contract, “the biggest ever guaranteed to a high school player signed out of the draft” says Danny Knobler. They were not done there as they shell out $800k to pick up their 5th round pick in Casey Crosby and another $1.5M for Cale Iorg.

This is a pretty exciting time to be a Tiger fan. Mike Ilitch clearly wants to maintain a winning team and the current team, while slumping, is battling for the division title.

It’s also a good time to take a look at where some of the other players drafted are and how they are doing so far. Below is a breakout of the top draft picks who have been signed already and already playing ball in the Tigers farm system.

2007 Draft non-Pitchers

Justin Henry 9 2B Oneonta Tigers 165 57 25 12 .345 .437 .430

The two standouts here are Charlie Furbush who has already been kicking butt with the West Michigan Whitecaps and Danny Worth who is being effective in Lakeland.
