Jair Jurrjens gets first MLB start for Detroit on Wednesday

The Free Press is reporting that Jair Jurrjens will get the start Wednesday against the Indians. Jurrjens has spent the year with the Tigers Double-A affiliate the Erie Seawolves and lately been pretty dominant and has not pitched at the Triple-A level. For Erie Jair has posted a 7-5 record and 3.20 ERA. His last three outings have seen him pitch 23 innings allowing 12 hits, 2 earned runs and 24 strikeouts. Jurrjens was also the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week two weeks ago.

Jim Leyland was pretty positive on him:

“He has been throwing great, using more of his pitches, and is doing pretty good against left-handed batters,” manager Jim Leyland said in making the announcement.

This will be a major test for him in a situation that the Tigers need to walk out of with a win. This game is also scheduled to be shown on ESPN; lets hope he performs better than Virgil Vasquez did in a similar situation.

Either way I’m pretty excited to see what he can do at this level.
