Ramon Colon doing will in rehab outings in Toledo

With the struggles of the Detroit bullpen being a topic of much discussion around town, Roman Colon is silently working to get back on to the big league club. Tonight he made his fourth rehab start with the ‘Hens facing the Buffalo Bisons pitching 2 innings allowing only a single hit and striking out two.

Colon has not pitched in a Major League game since August 2006 and underwent surgery in September. He made his first rehab start on May 27th pitching a single inning and allowing 2 runs off of 3 hits but it’s gotten much better from there. Below is a game-by-game breakout so far:

Date IP H ER BB SO ERA
May 27th 1.0 3 2 1 0 18.00
May 29th 1.2 0 0 1 0 0.00
May 31st 1.0 1 0 1 1 0.00
June 2nd 2.00 1 0 1 2 0.00

This has put his ERA at 3.18 over 5.2 innings pitched. If he continues to show improvement and consistency he could earn another shot at Detroit and become a piece of the bullpen. He’s not going to be a silver bullet but Romans’ PECOTA projections (subscription required) have him with a 4.29 ERA over 60.3 innings pitched, which is a better projection with than both Ledezma and Grilli.

I’m sure Dave Dombrowski has his eye closely on Colon’s progress as he has until June 26th to decide what to do with him.
