Joel Zumaya to miss 3 months with ruptured tendon

Zumaya saw a specialist today and the diagnosis isn’t good:

Detroit Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya will have surgery to repair a tendon in his right middle finger. He’s expected to miss the next three months, according to the Tigers.

This leaves a number of questions in the air. Who will fill in and eat up innings in Joel’s absence? It’s becoming apparent that Aquilino Lopez won’t. Upon Zumaya’s return, is relief the correct role for him? I’ve heard a few saying that this injury could be due to his throwing so hard in such a role and that moving him to a starter role would force him to push the breaks a bit on the speed.

I don’t really know the right answer there but this loss will have an impact and force Fernando Rodney into an even more important role.
