So we’re 15 games into the season trying to follow up on a tremendous 2006. Last year was certainly a year we’ll never forget and this year the Tigers are off to a good start already as well. But how good?
Since we’ve gotten the day off, I’ve taken a look at how the season thus far compares to the 2006 campaign in a few categories.
- Winning Percentage
- Team Batting Average
- Opponent Team Batting Average
Winning Percentage
Detroit started off hot in 2006 winning 5 games in a row and taking some tough losses immediately following. The schedule last year was not as forgiving as they faced the White Sox, Cleveland and Toronto right off the bat. The Tigers current WP is .600. On April 18th, 2006 the Tigers WP was .500. Here’s how it worked out:
So while not starting off 5-0, this years Tigers team is already surpassing. Continue to see more comparisons.
Team Batting Average
We all know this year the teams offense has been rather slow to the gates and last years was quite a bit better in this category, yes even without Gary Sheffield. As of right now the Tigers are batting a collective .239 where 1-year ago they had combined for .285. The max game BA from ‘06 during this period was .467 and two games were greater than .400. This hasn’t been the case so far this year.
Opponent Team Batting Average
The last few years Detroit has certainly been known for their pitching. This year they are off to a start pretty much mimicing last years performance. So far the opponent batting average is .245, in 2006 it was .247.
Pitching has kept the Tigers in the game this year as well as last year although Todd Jones did wait until May 6th for his first blown save though he didn’t pitch until April 21st. Fun stats and nice look back on one of those crappy days off.
