Game 6 Preview: Tigers vs Orioles

Detroit Tigers (3-2) vs Baltimore Orioles (2-4)
Oriole Park at Camden Yards @ 3:05 pm EST

Baltimore Orioles

This game will be the Orioles home opener so the Baltimore crowd will be out in full force. The Orioles started the season on a sour note by getting swept by the Minnesota Twins by an overall margin of 8-17. They made up ground by taking the series from the east division favorite NY Yankees on the road.

On the mound for Baltimore will be Daniel Cabrera who is the #2 in the rotation. He had one start against the Twins which wasn’t a bad outing giving up three runs over seven innings. He was able to pitch efficiently against Minnesota which is no small feat and the Tigers will need to get out of their hitting rut to be effective.

The 2006 Tigers were inconsistent against Cabrera racking up 11 walks and 11 runs over 9 innings while also succumbing to 12 strikeouts. While not seeing him too often the Tigers have had success against with a team ‘06 line .273/.455/.455 with a few going having more success:

  • Carlos Guillen – 2 walks, 2 hits (one double), 2 runs in 5 AB’s
  • Brandon Inge – 3 walks, 2 runs in 5 AB’s
  • Curtis Granderson – Hit .333 AVG with a triple

Detroit Tigers

Chad Durbin will get his first 57th major league start but his first since 2004 and first for Detroit. Durbin did well last year in Toledo but has not had real success at the Major League level since 2001 with a 4.93 ERA with the Royals.

Hopefully Durbin will build on the momentum from the 9th inning of yesterday’s game. Hopefully the Tigers offense will follow suit and warm the bats up and give Chad some run support.

I will miss the game as I will be traveling overseas for work leaving at 4pm. So I probably won’t be doing a wrap up but will hopefully be able to watch some of the games online through the week!

Let’s be fair to Chad Durbin, who was once a top young prospect. Pitching for the Royals, where a pitcher may feel the need to throw the perfect pitch because he knows he’s not going to get any run support is a tough place for a young pitcher. Just look at current Tigers, Maroth and Bonderman there first couple of years in the bigs.

I think I am being fair. The year I sited in 2001 was with the Royals. The later years were with Cleveland & Arizona. Cleveland was then able to put runs on the board.

I certainly hope Durbin does pull it together, I’m just not holding out much hope. I’ll be he see’s another start and then Wil Ledezma is put in the rotation.
