Dr. Andrews gives Campusano the bad news

Does Dr. James Andrews ever get to give good news? I know I always see the bad news truck coming when he’s mentioned. This time it involves Tiger Rule 5 draft pick Edward Campusano. Campusano will undergo Tommy John surgery then go to Lakeland for rehab.

With the promise he’s shown through his minor league career and this spring I’ll be the Tigers will hold onto him through the year, Jason Beck explains the rules, which in baseball are always confusing:

Under Rule 5 Draft terms, a drafted player must spend the entire season on his new club’s 25-man roster or else be offered back to his old team for $25,000. In case of injury, if the player spends more than half the season on the disabled list, he can remain on the new club, but goes into the next season with the same restrictions. In other words, the Tigers can put him on the DL and treat him as a Rule 5 pick for next year.

So it looks like he will get another shot next year which is a “good thing” ™.
