It is almost the time of year that we stop looking at prospects and hoping. We will, in the next month, know which prospects have made the team and which we will be watching in the minors for another year (or the first year in some cases!). I always enjoy looking at the prospects and do track them closely through the year but it is almost time to move on for the most part. So with this in mind, I take one last off season look at prospects around the AL Central.
Kevin Goldstein spent much of the off season looking at each teams prospects in his “Future Shock” series ending in this list of top 100 prospects. The Tigers had two in the top 20 and who they were was no surprise: Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller. Outside of that, none of Detroit’s prospects cracked the top 100. Ex-Tiger, current Yankee Humberto Sanchez was 65th on the list.
When Kevin looked exclusively at the Tigers the third listed propect was Gorky’s Hernandez; who I wrote about a week ago and the fourth was Jair Jurrjens. While Jurrjens ended the year in AA Erie both are a bit off from cracking the 25-man.
Other AL Central teams appear to have a few more top tier prospects (but not by many) and here is how they panned out around the rest of the Central:
| Detroit Tigers | Chicago White Sox | Cleveland Indians | Kansas City Royals | Minnesota Twins | |
| # of Prospects | 2 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 4 |
The top prospect was Alex Gordon who I highlighted yesterday who is currently in the Royals system. Another point of note on the Royals is that all three of their prospects are in the top 25.
Some other teams prospects we are likely to see this year are Twins Matt Garza (whom we did run into last year) and Glen Perkins, Cleveland’s Adam Miller and Chicago’s Ryan Sweeney.
Now on to the Big Leagues!
