Is this the last year for Kenny Rogers?

And should it be? Yes and Yes.

A few people that I’ve spoken with today have made the assumption that a recent article in the Free Press is Kenny making a statement that he wishes to continue his career in Detroit beyond 2007. This is not how I read it at all. Below is really the only relevant paragraph in the article:

Asked Friday if he would like to finish his career with the Tigers, Rogers said, “No doubt. None whatsoever. I think that’s self-evident. Everyone, I hope, would know that. There’s no other place I want to play.”

This is the last year of Kenny Rogers career. While he might like to continue under certain circumstances those just don’t exist here in Detroit and I’m sure he knows it. Detroit has amazing talent at the Pitching position coming up from the minors or already moving up. From Ledezma to Miller, for lefties, there is plenty of talent ready to take his place and for much cheaper.

He could possibly go to another team but my money is him hanging it up after this year. Kenny has had an amazing run in the big leagues and it is an honor for him to finish off here in Detroit, hopefully on a playoff-bound team. Either way he’s going out on a high note.
