2006 was a huge year for the Tigers pitching staff. They lead the league in ERA with a 3.84, Justin Verlander won Rookie of the Year, Joel Zumaya was the fastest pitcher in the Majors, Jeremy Bonderman and Kenny Rogers both turned up heroic performances in the Playoffs. With such a wonderful year you cannot help but hope that translates into a good showing next year. That’s why I thought it would be fun to take a look back and what a #1 team ERA meant for teams the next season.
Below is the results from 2002 onward for teams who finished first in team ERA.
| Year | Team ERA Leader | ERA | Finish | Next Season ERA Rank | Next Season ERA | Next Season Finish |
| 2002 | Atlanta Braves | 3.13 | Lost NLDS | 12th | 4.10 | Lost NLDS |
| 2003 | LA Dodgers | 3.16 | 2nd Place NL West | 4th | 4.01 | Lost NLDS |
| 2004 | Atlanta Braves | 3.74 | Lost NLDS | 11th | 3.98 | Lost NLDS |
| 2005 | St. Louis Cardinals | 3.49 | Lost NLCS | 16th | 4.54 | Won World Series |
No team was able to capture the Team ERA lead in consequtive years, however each team went on into the playoffs the next year. Obviously these numbers tell us one thing; The Tigers will win the World Series. You heard it here first. :)
